This is one of those situations where I wish I actually used a real camera instead of my phone camera. The pictures I have do not do the food justice at all!
This was my fourth time to Canal Bistro. 3 of those times I went with my boyfriend, and we usually order the same thing. We'll spice things up by choosing a different appetizer, but we always split the same entrees. He orders the Gyros platter, and I'd get the lamb kabobs - served medium rare. If you don't ask for that, they tend to overcook the lamb. yuck.
The Gyros platter is very solid. It's big enough to split between 2 people. You don't get pita with it, but you get everything else and I prefer that. The meat is so tasty and really well seasoned. Definitely, my favorite gyro meat in Indy.
Since I now have a food blog, I thought I'd try something new. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made (food-wise, of course). I decided to get the moussaka.
And this is why I wish I used a real camera! It kind of looks like mush in that picture, but it was SOOOOOOOOOOOO good. The server described it like lasagna. It's a layered dish with potatoes, eggplant, tenderloin that's ground in house, creamy bechamel sauce and cinnamon. I was apprehensive about the cinnamon, but it made it smell so good and wasn't overpowering at all. My roommate broke my heart saying that it's difficult to make. I guess I'll just have to go back to Canal Bistro again.
Oh, we got the calamari for an appetizer. It had 2 big tentacle pieces and lots of small rings. The rings barely had any meat inside. It was pretty terrible, unless you like to only eat fried rings.

Traditional moussaka IS really difficult to make...but the good news is that you can make some adjustments (doing it like a sort of stuffed eggplant) and still end up with something really delicious, and probably healthier.
ReplyDeleteThat is good news! Let's make it next time we cook. :-)
